Case Study: The John Lewis Partnership

Putting powers back in the hands of staff has been apparent in the case of the office workers and retail staff of the John Lewis Partnership, founded by John Spedan Lewis in 1928. He set up a power base that was commercially viable and at the same time ‘democratic’, giving each employee a share in the business they co-owned.24 The end product is truly a partnership, allowing management to be entrepreneurial and staff to share in the ownership and running of the organisation.

The financial gains here are likely to improve the productivity of employees, who become more efficient and satisfied in their job as they perceive that hard work will result in higher financial gain and personal reward. I came across a former employee of John Lewis who lives near to Sloane Square in London. She enjoys a comfortable retirement, having worked for the Partnership in Victoria as a senior administrator – she was always full of praise for John Lewis and expressed great admiration for the ‘checks and balances’ in the way self-governance operated there.
